About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Controls Project Engineer to join a leading organisation within the automation and material handling industry.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering complete control system solutions that comply with legislation, meet company standards, and fulfil customer requirements. You will play a key technical role within project teams, occasionally acting as Design Manager or Commissioning Manager, depending on project scope and complexity.
This position requires both strong technical leadership and hands-on engineering expertise to ensure each project is delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety, and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical input during tender and sales stages, assisting with estimating and concept designLead the technical delivery of control system projects from design through to commissioningDevelop and maintain controls design standards and documentationReview requirements and complete compliance matricesValidate design solutions against customer specifications and industry standardsSupport Controls Engineers in developing PLC software and troubleshooting when requiredManage and maintain all project technical documentation (including PMDRs)Coordinate integration between electrical, mechanical, IT, and high-level control systemsDrive consistent quality improvements and manage project changes or defectsLiaise regularly with Project Managers, Design Managers, and the wider engineering teamPromote and maintain high standards of health, safety, and environmental complianceRequired Skills & Experience
Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Controls, or Automation Engineering (or proven equivalent experience)Strong understanding of electrical principles and control systemsSignificant experience in PLC hardware and software development - Siemens essential (Allen Bradley or Schneider also advantageous)Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and PLC codeFamiliarity with SCADA systems, sortation equipment, RFID, and scanner integrationGood understanding of current CDM regulationsExperience in Material Handling Systems, Baggage Handling, or IntralogisticsExcellent organisational and project management skillsConfident communicator with the ability to lead technical discussionsWillingness to travel both within the UK and internationally as requiredDesirable Attributes
Proactive problem-solver with strong analytical skillsCollaborative approach with experience working in multi-disciplinary teamsPassionate about continuous improvement and innovationWorking Environment
You'll be based primarily in the UK, working in office, airport, and industrial environments. The role may occasionally involve travel within the UK and overseas to support installations, testing, and commissioning activities.
